Demonstration on May 1st, in front of the National Congress, brings together activists demanding a parliamentary investigation and denouncing animal cruelty in Brazil
A nationwide mobilization in defense of animal rights is scheduled for May 1st at 11 a.m., in front of Brazil’s National Congress in Brasília.
Unlike other recent demonstrations, the main focus of this protest is to demand the creation of a Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) to investigate the case of Orelha, a community dog whose story has sparked outrage across the country.
Orelha, known for roaming freely and being cared for by local residents, has become a symbol in the fight against animal cruelty after being the victim of a violent incident that raised concerns about the investigation process and accountability. The case gained national attention and, for activists, now represents the broader issue of weak enforcement and punishment for animal abuse crimes in Brazil.

Under the slogan “From north to south, Brazil wants the truth. Brazil demands justice for Orelha,” the demonstration aims to pressure authorities—including the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta—to move forward with the creation of the inquiry. Organizers see the CPI as essential to ensure transparency and prevent the case from going unpunished.
Beyond the call for a parliamentary investigation, the protest also highlights structural issues, such as the need for consistent public policies dedicated to animal protection. Activists are advocating for dedicated funding for initiatives like spay and neuter programs, veterinary care, and support for independent organizations. According to them, the lack of stable funding undermines the effectiveness of these efforts and leaves the cause dependent on sporadic actions.
The demonstration is expected to feature well-known figures in the animal rights movement, including Kabelo Crespo, Estefânia (guardian of the dog Johnny), Fernando Silva, Diego Sanchez, and Camilla Lagertha, reinforcing the nationwide mobilization around the case.
Organizers are inviting the public to participate peacefully, bringing signs and messages in support of animal rights. The expectation is to gather supporters from different regions of the country, uniting voices around a central demand: justice for Orelha and stronger action against animal cruelty in Brazil.
